The market finally managed to break the 40000 barrier and hold it to close at 40030, up 123pts for the day. Turnover was 216mln shares while value traded was Rs 10.6bln both below last weeks average.
Oil sector supported the index as international crude markets consider the possibility of OPEC moves to control output. PPL, OGDC and POL climbed 1.5pc. Chemicals sector perfomed well. ARPL, AKZO, BERG, BUXL and LINDE all closed at upper cap. APL, NRL and PSO reported earnings of Rs 46/96/37.8 with cash payouts in line with market expectations. With heavy weight announcements still to come the index could see some more action before the close of earnings season.
